What is Plastic Surgery?
Plastic surgery encompasses both aesthetic/cosmetic and reconstructive surgery. Both of these types of surgeries are performed by a plastic surgeon.
Aesthetic surgery is performed to reshape normal structures of the body in order to improve or enhance the patient's appearance and, in many cases, self-esteem. Some of the most common types of plastic surgery include breast augmentation, body contouring, and facelifts. Because cosmetic surgery is an elective procedure, it is usually not covered by health insurance.
Reconstructive
surgery is performed on abnormal structures of the body
that have been caused by congenital defects, developmental
abnormalities, trauma, infection, tumors, or disease. This
type of surgery is generally performed to improve bodily
functions, but may also be performed to provide a more normal
appearance to the affected area. Reconstructive surgery
is usually covered by most health insurance policies; however,
coverage for specific procedures and the level of coverage
may vary greatly.
Whether you are having aesthetic or reconstructive plastic surgery the overall goal is lifestyle enhancement. Every aspect of plastic surgery focuses on achieving optimal body appearance and function.
The doctors and staff at The Metropolitan Institute for Plastic Surgery are committed to providing optimal outcomes and lifestyle enhancement.
