What Is Cosmoderm? Sun exposure, pollution, natural aging, and lifestyle factors can all diminish the collagen layer that supports your skin. And where collagen diminishes, unwelcome lines and wrinkles may appear, especially on the face and neck. CosmoDerm is a non-surgical, cosmetic procedure that replaces your natural collagen. It is injected just below the surface of the skin and effectively fills in unwanted facial lines and wrinkles. CosmoDerm is ideal for areas around the mouth and lips where a natural look and feel is critical, but it can also be successfully used to reduce worry lines on the forehead and frown lines between the eyes.

CosmoDerm is one of the only Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved dermal fillers made from human collagen. Collagen dermal fillers have been proven safe and effective for more than 20 years. Treatment results are immediate and the results typically last between three and six months. Of course, results may vary among individuals. The staff and doctors of The Metropolitan Institute for Plastic Surgery will work with you to develop a collagen replacement program to meet your individual needs and to give you the results you desire.

Is CosmoDerm Safe?
Collagen replacement therapy is a safe, non-surgical wrinkle correction treatment in which highly purified human collagen is injected into the skin to replace the skin's lost collagen. Human collagen is the dermal filler that is closest to what is normally found in the skin. CosmoDerm is approved by the Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and has been tested in accordance with strict FDA requirements. The end result of this stringent testing is a safe product, free from detectable viruses or contaminants. During your initial consultation, the staff and doctors of The Metropolitan Institute for Plastic Surgery will address any safety concerns you have regarding the use of CosmoDerm.

Where Can CosmoDerm Be Used?
CosmoDerm is injected just below the surface of the skin, filling in unwanted lines and wrinkles. It can be used to add definition to the lip border, to minimize deep creases on the side of the mouth, to fill in worry lines on the forehead, to reduce frown lines between the eyes, crow's feet, and smile lines, and to minimize acne scars.

How Long Does CosmoDerm Last?
Collagen replacement therapy with CosmoDerm replenishes the skin's collagen layer, smoothing lines and wrinkles. The results achieved with CosmoDerm are natural looking and are evident immediately. Results typically last between three and six months, depending on the individual. Ongoing treatments are needed to maintain results beyond the six-month time period. If treatment is discontinued, the natural collagen is gradually absorbed by the body and the treated area returns to its original appearance. As with all cosmetic procedures, results may vary and it is best to discuss your individual case with the doctors and staff of The Metropolitan Institute for Plastic Surgery during your initial consultation.

Your CosmoDerm Treatment
CosmoDerm is a dermal filler that is injected just below the surface of the skin to replenish the collagen layer, filling lines, wrinkles, and scars from the inside out. The doctor uses an ultra fine needle to inject CosmoDerm into the areas of the face and neck that appear wrinkled. CosmoDerm is formulated with a topical anesthesia for comfort; in fact, most patients report feeling little or no sensation. The entire treatment takes less than an hour, depending on the number of areas being treated.

No recovery time is needed; you may resume normal activity immediately. Side effects of the procedure are minimal, other than short-term swelling and redness in the areas of the injections. Results appear immediately and can last up to six months.

Precautions
While no pre-treatment allergy tests are required, there are a few precautions you should take prior to your CosmoDerm treatment.

· Avoid using aspirin, non-steroid anti-inflammatory medicines, St. John's Wort, or high does of Vitamin E supplements for one week prior to your treatment because they may increase bruising or bleeding at the site of your injections.

· Do not consume alcohol leading up to and after your CosmoDerm treatment because alcohol can effect the circulation and blood flow in your body, which could impact the effectiveness of your treatment.

· You should avoid receiving CosmoDerm injections if you have an infection in the site where the infection will be placed.

· The safety of CosmoDerm for use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding has not been established.

· The safety of CosmoDerm for patients under 18 years of age has not been determined.

· You should NOT receive CosmoDerm injections if you have a hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients in the drug formula.

The doctors and staff of The Metropolitan Institute for Plastic Surgery will discuss these precautions and answer any specific questions you may have during your initial consultation.

Post Treatment Instructions

· Immediately after your treatment, you may notice temporary redness and swelling at the injection site. These effects are minor and, if present, typically disappear in about two weeks. Cold compresses may be used immediately after your treatment to reduce swelling. If the inconvenience continues beyond two to three days or if other reactions occur, call The Metropolitan Institute for Plastic Surgery.

· Until any initial redness and swelling have disappeared, avoid exposure of the treated area to intense heat (sunlamp or sunbathing).

· Avoid touching the treated area within six hours of your treatment. After that, the area can be gently washed with soap and water.

· Avoid exercise and alcohol for six hours after your treatment.

Questions You May Have

· Are there other procedures that could be done along with CosmoDerm injections to reduce wrinkles and restore the youthful appearance of my face?

Botox cosmetic is frequently used in combination with facial filler to achieve a multidimensional rejuvenation of the face. These non-surgical procedures complement each other to produce a refreshed appearance.

In addition, there are many surgical procedures that can be used to enhance the youthful appearance of your face and neck: facelift, forehead and brow lift, neck lift, and eyelid lift are a few examples. Complementary procedures will be discussed with you during your initial consultation with the doctors and staff of The Metropolitan Institute for Plastic Surgery.

· Will my insurance coverage pay for my CosmoDerm injections?

CosmoDerm injections are considered a cosmetic treatment and, therefore, are not covered by your insurance. You are responsible for the full payment for your procedure. Cost and payment information will be discussed in detail with you during your initial consultation.
